Unibestos: UNARCO to Pittsburgh Corning Timeline

A dated history of the Unibestos trade name, manufacturer transition and production years.

Historical recordsOctober 2026

1930s: the earlier Unibestos era

A 1983 federal decision describes Unarco production from approximately 1936 to 1962. Pittsburgh Corning interrogatory responses refer to Navy studies and possible manufacturing in 1937 or 1938; its own response expressed uncertainty about early commercial sales.

July 1, 1962: product-line transfer

Pittsburgh Corning acquired selected assets, facilities and the Unibestos business from Union Asbestos and Rubber Company. UNARCO continued as a separate company; the transaction was a product-line acquisition rather than the purchase of the entire corporation.

1963: trade name registration

The interrogatory response identifies Unibestos trademark registration no. 757,144, dated September 24, 1963. The trade name may appear in specifications, invoices and cartons.

1964: second documented plant

Pittsburgh Corning reported making Unibestos at Tyler, Texas from July 1962 and at Port Allegany, Pennsylvania beginning April 1964.

February 1972: production ends

The company reported ending production about February 1, 1972. Later work on older piping may have involved materials installed during earlier years.
