Unibestos: Navy and Shipyard History

Trace the early Navy testing history and later marine pipe-insulation uses.

Historical recordsOctober 2026

Navy origins in the historical record

Pittsburgh Corning interrogatory responses describe 1930s federal Navy studies and early UNARCO manufacture. A later California appellate decision discusses Navy evaluations of Unibestos for heat performance and stability.

Pipe runs aboard vessels

Engine rooms, boiler rooms, passageways, overhead piping and tight equipment spaces are useful locations to recall. Pipe covering might be handled during construction, refit, repair or removal.

Names and dates to remember

Record the vessel, shipyard, trade, dates, pipe location, contractor and whether the work occurred during new construction or overhaul. Unibestos appears in historical Navy procurement discussions, including 1960s insulation specifications.

Follow the trade

Insulators, pipefitters, machinists and other shipyard trades may remember different aspects of the same pipe run: who installed the insulation, who opened equipment and who cleaned up.
