Unibestos Block and Custom-Cut Insulation History

Understand the documented block form and how it differed from standard pipe covering.

Historical recordsOctober 2026

Blocks from pipe-covering stock

Pittsburgh Corning stated that Unibestos was produced for pipe covering and, on customer request, was sometimes cut into blocks. The record supports this limited custom-cut form rather than a separate, universally stocked block product.

What a worker might remember

A rectangular piece, a saw or cutting bench, a carton of half-round insulation, and the dimensions of the surface can distinguish a block-cutting task from routine pipe-section installation.

Where shape matters

Boiler rooms, industrial mechanical areas and shipboard piping contain both straight runs and irregular surfaces. A person may recall the shape of a piece more readily than its trade name.
