Remembering the places where Central New York worked
The industrial history of Onondaga County stretches across Syracuse, Solvay, DeWitt, Liverpool, Baldwinsville, and neighboring communities. Company names changed, plants moved, and production lines evolved. Those changes matter when a former worker or family member is trying to remember an employer, building, job, product, or period of employment.
This collection brings together detailed historical research and source references. It is organized around the places and periods people may remember, with each history distinguishing documented company activity from evidence about particular products or materials.
Which workplace do you remember?
A company name alone may not identify the building where someone worked. Start with a road, neighborhood, product, department, or approximate decade. These clues can help distinguish workplaces with similar names or changing ownership.
| Remembered name or place | Useful distinction | Continue the history |
|---|---|---|
| GE / Electronics Park / Martin Marietta / Lockheed Martin | The Electronics Park campus has a corporate succession history. Record the decade, department, entrance and building; a later employer name does not by itself establish an earlier worker's location. | Electronics Park timeline → |
| Carrier / Thompson Road | The postwar Thompson Road property history includes a 1952 transfer from Syracuse University. Separate a remembered building from a company-wide address. | Carrier timeline → |
| Crucible / Halcomb / Sanderson | Historical steelmaking names and sites are not interchangeable. A street, mill, department or period can help identify the correct operation. | Crucible timeline → |
| Crouse-Hinds | Electrical equipment manufacturing included distinct processes and work areas. Ask whether the memory concerns casting, machining, assembly, testing or maintenance. | Crouse-Hinds timeline → |
| New Process Gear | Distinguish the earlier Baldwinsville and Syracuse chapters from later DeWitt operations. | New Process Gear timeline → |
| Cambridge Filter / Cambridge Aerosolve | A product or filter-media name may be remembered even when a plant address is uncertain. Distinguish the historical company and product records from an individual employee's specific facility or materials. | Cambridge Filter history → |
| Niagara Mohawk / regional power operations | A utility name may cover generating stations, substations, line crews, offices and maintenance sites across many communities. Record the specific station, crew base, route or facility if remembered. | Niagara Mohawk history → |
| Solvay / Milton Avenue / Frazer & Jones | Several employers occupied the same industrial neighborhood. A nearby railroad crossing or neighboring plant may be a stronger clue than a remembered company name. | Milton Avenue → · Frazer & Jones → |
Same employer does not always mean the same workplace
When a company moved, expanded, merged or occupied several buildings, the place and years can be more useful than the name alone. For example, New Process Gear's early Baldwinsville and Syracuse chapters should not be treated as the later DeWitt plant; the Electronics Park name spans several corporate eras; and Niagara Mohawk records may refer to widely separated utility facilities.
If you remember a building but not its name, start with the nearest road, rail line, gate, parking area or neighboring business. If you remember the employer but not the building, start with the product, department and decade. These are research starting points, not conclusions about what materials were present.
Details worth writing down
Approximate years; shift or department; entrances and nearby roads; supervisors and coworkers; machines and products; maintenance or construction work nearby; and any photographs, union records, pay stubs or other documents still available. A partial memory is a starting point for research, not a conclusion about exposure.

Help preserve a workplace memory
Company photographs, product names, shift schedules, neighboring businesses, building entrances, coworkers, and the years someone worked can all help reconstruct a workplace history. A person's recollection can be useful even when the employer's name has changed.
