Kaylo Cartons, Labels and Product Identification

Historical carton markings, product identity and warning-label chronology.

The name on the carton

A 1956 Kaylo brochure identified Owens-Illinois Glass Company as manufacturer and Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation as national distributor. A worker may remember the distributor name on a carton even though a different company made the insulation.

1966: asbestos wording on cartons

The Illinois Supreme Court recounted a 1966 Kaylo carton label stating that the product contained asbestos fiber and advising workers to avoid breathing dust. The wording and placement of a label can help distinguish remembered packaging from other decades.

1970: revised carton caution

The same judicial account describes revised caution wording in 1970, referring to the inhalation of dust. Packaging recollections are especially useful when paired with approximate dates and a remembered supplier.

Remember the delivery

Think about cardboard cartons, pallet stacks, a distributor truck, handwritten stockroom labels, the name used by the crew, and whether a carton carried a printed caution. Record the remembered wording without trying to reconstruct it from a modern image.
