Insulator work histories: identify the system, material and time period

Insulation work can involve very different materials across different eras. A useful history identifies the piping, boiler, vessel, duct or equipment being insulated, the material handled, the workplace and approximate years.

What to Remember

Build the history around the work

Thermal systems

Steam lines, boilers, vessels, turbines, process piping and other high-temperature systems can define the area of research.

Material form

Pipe covering, block insulation, blankets, cloth, cement, sprayed material or removal debris may provide useful historical clues.

Installation or removal

New installation, repair, lagging removal and demolition can involve very different evidence and time periods.

Records

Specifications, engineering drawings, insulation contracts, abatement records, photographs, union histories and coworker testimony can help.

These categories are memory prompts, not a conclusion that any particular person encountered asbestos. Historical material use varies by workplace, equipment and time period.

Public occupational-safety context

OSHA identifies asbestos as a workplace hazard addressed by standards for general industry, construction and shipyard employment. The H&S investigation remains specific to the person's actual work history.
