You do not need to prepare a case before asking for help
The first conversation should reduce work for the family, not create another assignment. A broad chronology is enough to begin. Names and dates can be approximate; uncertainty should be identified rather than filled with guesses.

- Diagnosis and major treatment dates
- Employers, trades and military service
- Plants, shipyards, construction sites or buildings remembered
- Machines, materials or products that stand out
- Parents' or spouses' occupations
- Long-term talc or other relevant consumer-product use
Things you do not need
- A complete product list
- Perfect employment dates
- The name of every employer or contractor
- Proof of exposure before calling
- A finished theory of how exposure happened
- A box of organized records
What a careful first conversation can accomplish
It can identify the parts of the history that are known, the parts that are uncertain, people who may help with memory, records that may exist, and the next few questions worth investigating. It should also explain what the firm can and cannot do, how fees work, who may participate in the representation, and whether any time-sensitive legal issue requires attention.
After the call
You may be asked for employment records, military records, photographs, union information, medical records or names of family members and coworkers. That does not mean every item is required. The purpose is to preserve and test the history one piece at a time.
