Reconstruct the project, not merely the trade
Construction histories can be fragmented across contractors and sites. A useful checklist records the building type, phase of construction, renovation or demolition work, adjacent trades and materials encountered.
Project details
Record city, owner or project name, general contractor, approximate year and whether the work involved new construction, renovation, maintenance or demolition.
Tasks and materials
Drywall, joint compound, flooring, roofing, fireproofing, pipe systems, boilers, mechanical equipment and insulation may be relevant depending on trade and era.
People and documents
Coworkers, union records, building permits, specifications, architectural drawings and contractor records may help reconstruct a project decades later.
